🪕 Drumming with the UT Middle Eastern Ensemble
Artistic practice is such an effective tool for coping with stress, sadness, and everything else life throws at us. Community connection, music, movement, and PLAY are what make life worth living!
We are currently in the thick of holiday season which can be simultaneously joyous and sorrowful. Please remember to gather with people who love you, play in the spirit of curiosity, sing even if you don’t know the notes, and dance at least a tiny bit everyday.
Lately one of my favorite stress-preventing practices has been to play frame drum and sing. And if I get to play with other people: the healing is magnified!
Performing this song “Erzurum Çarşı Pazar” with the University of Texas Middle Eastern Ensemble in our Fall concert last month was so magical! I just love the experience of collective singing while playing a 10-beat rhythm on frame drum.
🧿 You can have a similar experience inside The Cohesion Collective as we continue learning to play frame drum and sing with a Guest Artist Workshop taught by Faruk Çalışkan!
Learn the vocal melody, lyrics, and hypnotic 10-beat rhythm for the moving Turkish song “Erzurum Çarşı Pazar” (also known as “Sari Gelin”) with bağlama player and scholar Faruk Çalışkan.
