⏳ How I Created a Performance in 5 Minutes

Last week, my friend Drake and I had the opportunity to perform at a gothic-themed party. Because he and I live several hours apart, we needed to create an on-theme performance that didn’t require any rehearsal. Naturally, utilizing my structured group improv format, Cued Cohesion, was the way to go! Check out a clip of the performance here:

That’s the beauty of this format: having this skillset in our back pockets made it easy to prepare for the gig, we didn’t have to create and learn a choreography specific to this theme (that we might never use again), we cut down on rehearsal time, and through this experience, we affirmed that the Cued Cohesion improv format really does work in a huge variety of contexts! The only thing we had to decide ahead of time was what song to use and what to wear. Simple!

When thinking through the performance, we almost didn’t use the Cued Cohesion movements that feel more light-hearted and jubilant because we worried they might not fit this context and the industrial goth song we chose (thanks, Kamrah for suggesting “The Church of the Goat” by The Devil & the Universe!). We contemplated adjusting the movements slightly to be more on-theme (perhaps change the claps to a fist pump or something “heavier” in feel?) but we ultimately decided to just commit to the raqs-sharqi-inspired format as-is, and it worked out splendidly! The fusing of all these elements felt natural, fun, and most importantly: exciting for the audience to watch.

And they had no idea it was improvised!

I loved this dance opportunity! Drake and I were able to create art that was low-stress while dancing with a friend in a cool venue, and share that art with an appreciative audience. And we got paid to do it! How cool is that?!

That’s exactly why I created The Cohesion Collective: to give others the opportunity far and wide to come together and move beautifully together, utilizing a shared vocabulary of movement styles…regardless of where they are on their dance journey, professionally or just for fun.

When I shared this video in The Cohesion Collective community forum, everyone was blown away!

Something I love about Cued Cohesion is that it can be easily adapted to music and situations, here’s the perfect example! Without a doubt it has also saved me from having to do choreography in a short time!
